Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory

The Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory studies flows of interest in Chemical Engineering by solving numerically the equations arising from mass balances, energy momentum using the finite volume and finite element method.

L-CFD works with CFD computational packages like CFX/ANSYS and FLUENT/ANSYS. However, the laboratory develops CFD models and works with free software platforms such as Open-Foam.

The works currently carried out include studies of equipment in the petrochemical industry, design of mixing tanks by numerical and experimental simulation. L-CFD also develops environmental models of wastewater dispersion. Currently, the L-CFD has a model for studying the dispersion of effluents in rivers that is recommended by Cetesb, an environmental inspection body in the State of São Paulo.

This model is cited in the publication “Ecothixocological Control of Liquid Effluents in the State of São Paulo” prepared by Cetesb in 2008 which, in its chapter 7, cites the L-CFD model as a successful experiment for determining the effluent mixing zone in rivers, so that the L-CFD also provides consultancy in the environmental area.

Multiphase Process and Particle Technology Laboratory

LAPROM has received undergraduate and graduate students from FEQ and other Units such as FEEC, studying a wide variety of problems that are fundamental as well as applied (pharmaceuticals, alumina, etc.).).

Some of the topics studied include particle size distribution, properties, fluid dynamic characterization and mixing in low and high velocity beds; drag; heat and mass transfer.

Other studies include applications of fluidized bed combustion and gasification of different fuels (biomass, for example).

Considering biomass, some other general applied studies are being carried out, such as: transport, storage and management of biomass.

The Laboratory of Particle Technology and Multi-Phase Processes/LAPROM has facilities for the study of fluidization.

For example, the group operates bubbling beds and circulating fluidized beds on a semi-pilot scale, basic equipment such as scales, particle sampling, sieves, meters for measuring flowability and densities, among others.
